چکیده

A silica/electro-optic (EO) polymer phase modulator is proposed for millimeter-wave (MMW) radiation receiver with the use of a bowtie antenna. Waveguide design optimization is presented for a waveguide with an EO polymer core and silica/solgel cladding. Electrode effects on the insertion loss and poling efficiency are also analyzed and conditions for low-loss and high poling efficiency established. The bowtie antenna is simulated and shows a broadband response with a maximum at SGHz and a 3dB-bandwidth of approximately 12GHz. A fiber splicing technique is presented that reduces coupling loss between SMF -28 and the waveguide. Experimental results for a fabricated device with MMW-response between 10-14GHz are shown with carrier to first sideband intensity difference of up to -36dB.

Mesoporous sol-gel silica cladding for hybrid TiO2/electro-optic polymer waveguide modulators.

We report the efficient poling of an electro-optic (EO) polymer in a hybrid TiO(2)/electro-optic polymer multilayer waveguide modulator on mesoporous sol-gel silica cladding. The mesoporous sol-gel silica has nanometer-sized pores and a low refractive index of 1.24, which improves mode confinement in the 400-nm-thick EO polymer film in the modulators and prevents optical absorption from the low...

Polymeric Electro-optic Modulators: From Chromophore Design to Integration with Semiconductor Very Large Scale Integration Electronics and Silica Fiber Optics

Chromophores with optimized second-order optical nonlinearity to optical loss ratios are synthesized, poled with an electrical field, and coupled into hardened polymer matrixes. Acentric order, which is necessary for electro-optic activity, is optimized by the consideration of chromophore-chromophore electrostatic interactions as well as chromophore-poling field interactions and thermal collisi...

A Compact Hybrid Silicon/Electro-Optic Polymer Resonant Cavity Modulator Design

The design and simulation of a novel resonant cavity optical modulator incorporating a hybrid silicon/electro-optic polymer slot waveguide structure is presented in this work. The device utilizes the electro-optic polymer in the cavity region to provide an active material for modulation and includes distributed Bragg reflectors in single mode silicon waveguide regions at each end of the cavity ...

Sol-Gel Material-Enabled Electro-Optic Polymer Modulators

Sol-gels are an important material class, as they provide easy modification of material properties, good processability and are easy to synthesize. In general, an electro-optic (EO) modulator transforms an electrical signal into an optical signal. The incoming electrical signal is most commonly information encoded in a voltage change. This voltage change is then transformed into either a phase ...

Surface-normal plasmonic modulator using sub-wavelength metal grating on electro-optic polymer thin film

In this work, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a surface-normal plasmonic modulator using sub-wavelength metal grating. The device consists of a 1.77 μm efficiently poled electro-optic polymer film, which is sandwiched between a plasmonic grating and an indium–tin oxide film. A strong Fano resonance with a sharp plasmonic bandgap at 1522 nm wavelength was observed and...
